Jochen Fahlenkamp

Cantor Jochen Fahlenkamp, born in 1963, comes from a musical family. Since 2001 he has served as a cantor for the Jewish Community of Berlin, following many years as a freelance cantor in Berlin and in other Jewish communities in Germany, particularly Dresden.

In the late 1980s, Cantor Fahlenkamp studied with the Hungarian-born Cantor Laszlo Pasztor, who follows in the tradition of his own teacher, Szigmond Tordai, and himself served for many years as a cantor for the Jewish Community of Berlin. In Berlin, Cantor Fahlenkamp has served in synagogues with and without organ music. He runs several Internet homepages on Jewish themes, including www.cantorfahlenkamp.com with personal tips on prayer services and concerts; www.cantorial-arts.com, with tips on important writings on Jewish liturgical music; www.Jüdisches-Lehrhaus.de, with texts on biblical interpretation and Jewish law (halacha). In addition, in 2008 Cantor Fahlenkamp started publishing “Tefillotyaacov – a biannual magazine on Jewish liturgical music,” in which he deals with both historical German-Jewish liturgical material and current synagogal practices, and includes numerous religious musical scores (“nussachot”).
