History
The Jewish Cemetery Berlin-Weissensee The Jewish Cemetery in Berlin Weißensee is the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe: more than 115,000 people have found their final resting place here. The cemetery covers approximately 42 hectares and was dedicated in 1880.
The cemetery tells the stories of both famous and ordinary people. Here one can see the grandeur of sepulchral architecture and impressive handcraft arts of sculptors and metal workers of the last two centuries, as well as many simple tombstones with Hebrew inscriptions lauding the good character of the deceased.
During decades of neglect until the Berlin Wall came down, parts of the cemetery became entangled in overgrowth. Important works by famous architects and artists have begun to decay. Over the past ten years, the Jewish Community, the cemetery administration and the Berlin Federal Office of Garden Preservation have been trying to stop this degeneration. Numerous individual initiatives (financial support by the Federal Government and the Government of Berlin, private donations and volunteer work by students) support the conservation and restoration work, repair of paths and stabilization of trees. However, these are only individual measures.
Please spread the word about this great document of cultural history and help preserve it, maintain it and prevent further damage!
The dead in his grave is omnipresent:
I lay in sleep, but my heart was awake (Book of Job, Psalter 5,2)
Please help ensure their eternal rest.
