Welfare Department

The purpose of the Welfare Department of the Jewish Community of Berlin is to give its members, their families as well as other people who find themselves in need of support specific guidance and counselling for all situations that may arise.

The Welfare Department is divided int8 units:

1. General Administration Main Tasks:

  • Quality management
  • Department administrator
  • Committee work
  • Public relations
  • Special projects

2. General Welfare Services / Clearinghouse

  • First time contact / new community membership support
  • Multilingual welfare counselling
  • Support for interaction with government offices and authorities
  • Support in clarification of citizenship and general civil status
  • Double-checking of documents and forms
  • Guidance counselling and foreign language support
  • Compensation (for survivors of the Nazi regime) and pension matters
  • Pensioner convalescence
  • Assistance in finding an apartment
  • Debt and legal counselling
  • Psychosocial counselling and crisis intervention

3. Services for the Aged (“Rund um's Alter”) / Handicapped Services

  • Multilanguage health and welfare counselling
  • Intensive counselling for community members over 80 years of age; birthday congratulations
  • Counselling for people with disabilities and their families.
  • Crisis intervention
  • Search for dwellings accessible for disabled people / Restructuring of dwellings and making them accessible to people with disabilities/ Move into retirement/nursing home / Disability certification
  • Accompaniment service to hospitals, etc.
  • Getting by and getting around; keeping active
  • Assistance in completing application forms and in the claims approval process
  • Case management
  • Volunteer programme
  • Coordination of interns
  • Complaint management

4. Migration and Integration

  • Job search / certification / job training / publically financed job programme
  • Office service / translations / job application assistance
  • Immigration / Emigration / Transience
  • Clarification of civil status / citizenship affairs / residence permits
  • Organisation of language and integration courses
  • Project development / group work / integration programme / courses/ social centre

5. Youth and Family

  • Counselling, intensive care for families facing crisis situations
  • Nursery school, school and vocational counselling
  • Counselling for drug abusers and criminal offenders
  • Divorce and child-custody arrangements

6. Liaison Office “Volunteer Services”

  • Recruitment, selection, assignments, certification and counselling of volunteers in the following areas:

7. Home care

  • Counselling, chaperoning residents in community facilities
  • Mobilisation measures
